These settlers were from Germany, many of whom came from the city of Karlsbad. After they relished in the similar mineral water as their homeland, they dubbed their new home Carlsbad. As more people sought out Carlsbad as their place of residence, they worked off the land, making the town’s agricultural industry thrive from fruit orchards and avocados. Carlsbad’s wide array of flower fields is a prime destination for locals and visitors every year during the spring. Besides this springtime attraction, Carlsbad -- a town that gained its cityhood in 1952 -- is proud of one of its main hotspots -- Legoland. This family-oriented theme park has elevated Carlsbad as a great place to spend a vacation. Carlsbad’s success as a holiday retreat can be summed up in three words: location, location, location. Major spas and resorts include La Costa Spa & Resort and the Four Seasons Aviara Golf Club. Once an area inhabited by the Luiseno Indians, Carlsbad later was home to the Spaniards who founded various missions, including Mission San Luis Rey, which is in present day Carlsbad.
