Neighborhood ProfileEscondido Real Estate![]() The city of Escondido has a deeply-rooted history, starting with a change of ownership in 1800s. As the area was a haven for gold miners in 1860, Escondido became a Mexican land grant, titled Recon del Diablo or “corner of the devil.” It was later bought by the Escondido Land and Town Co. in 1886. After the purchase, the Escondido Land and Town Co. promoted the growth of grapes, because the fruit could thrive with minimal irrigation. But once water was available, the area became a city in 1888, and a whole new industry of agribusiness flourished. With the rise of the Bear Valley Dam, which constructed Lake Wohlford, grapes were the initial cash crop, as the planting of citrus and avocados later followed. As the oldest winery in Escondido, Ferrara Winery has been producing wine since 1932, but has seen some new vineyards accompany them. Belle Marie Winery is the newest addition to the Escondido winery scene, which just recently opened its doors a couple of years ago. The area is also home to Orfila Winery, located east of I-15, on San Pasqual Road. The city of Escondido is known to celebrate its annual Grape Day Festival, which was first held in 1908, in honor of the city’s heritage. Gearing up for the festival’s 100-year anniversary, the Escondido Historical Society is planning a huge celebration next year, which is free to the community. The event will provide food, games, a 4-H petting zoo, entertainment stage and a parade on Grand Avenue. The festival was initially put on hold in 1947, but the historical society took control and has spearheaded the annual celebration ever since. Aside from the Grape Festival, Escondido boasts the California Center for the Arts, which includes a theater and an art museum as well as meeting rooms for community events. Revitalizing the downtown area is a goal for the city of Escondido. The process started in 1988, celebrating the city’s centennial, when a new city hall was built. The revitalizing process has continued with the Mercado Project, improvements in its “Antique District,” and construction of the Mingei International Museum North County. All these additions have contributed to the booming economy, yet maintain the charming nature of Escondido. Area Statistics
