Located on the northern edge of San Diego County, Oceanside is a beachfront community with 3.7 miles of pristine beach that attracts over 4 million visitors annually who surf, swim, jog, bike, tan or stroll the inviting beaches and the beachfront Strand.

Heading southbound from Los Angeles and Orange County, Oceanside is the gateway to sunny San Diego County. Oceanside, a title suitable for this city with three and a half miles of beaches, is home to a list of yearlong attractions and activities. In January, Oceanside kicks off the New Year with the NSSA Jr. Surfing Contest. This competition and similar contests continue throughout the calendar year. In the spring and summer, the Oceanside Amphitheater hosts many events that stretch into the Indian Summer months of September and October.

Visitors can get their dose of culture and local history at the Oceanside’s Museum of Art and the California Surf Museum. Starting in July through September, the Museum of Art showcases an exhibit titled, “The Art of Surfing: Classics and Legends from the Surf Archive,” examining the vibrant surf culture that is alive and well in Southern California.

Arts and entertainment are getting a boost this year as Main Street Oceanside Inc. extends its Thursday Farmer’s Market from the usual daytime hours to its Sunset Markets located on Pier View between Coast Highway and Cleveland streets.

Taking a walk on the not-so-beaten path, hikers can enjoy the natural wetlands in the area, including the Buena Vista Lagoon, which is a prime location for bird watching and nature walks. The Nature Interpretive Center is a convenient spot to learn about the lagoon and nearby natural wonders.

Like many cities in California, Oceanside has a rich history with Spanish and Native American influence.

In 1798, the founding of Mission San Luis Rey of Francia was established by Father Juan Crepi after he arrived in the modern day Oceanside in 1769. After a series of Mexican land grant acquisitions, 133,441 acres from Governor Alvarado was awarded to two brothers, Pio and Andreas Pico. That piece of land was Rancho Margarita and Las Flores, today known as Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base.

With the base intact since World War II, Oceanside has grown tremendously from a population of 4,652 in 1940 to a bustling and modern city with almost 180,000 inhabitants.
