Vista is located seven miles inland and 45 miles north of San Diego's center on the H-78 corridor. For many years it was best known as an agricultural area famed for its flowers, nuts, citrus and avocado trees.  The town derives its name from the Spanish word for "view" perhaps referring to its site among the rolling coastal hills of North San Diego County.

Since its incorporation in 1963, the town has more than tripled its population, to 83,000 and become known as a good place to raise a family.  In fact, in 1992, the city was named as one of the 50 best places in the nation to raise children as rated in "50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family."

Originally the Vista area was part of several historic Spanish land grants, and it is home to two historic adobes.  While agriculture is still a mainstay of the area, increasingly homes and condos are replacing open fields as families move into the area attracted by its proximity to the best of the San Diego lifestyle and its small town ambiance.  Beaches and recreation areas are close, and good jobs are available in a growing base of businesses.

Attractions in the area include the Vista Historical Museum, the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum, La Casa de Rancho Guajome and the Rancho Vista Adobe. Vista's Moonlight Amphitheatre offers performances of all types during the summer season, and The Wave Waterpark is a popular hot weather entertainment.  The Japanese Cultural Center is an active Buddhist temple and holds many events for the Japanese community.
